Measure Q funds will go towards Joseph George Middle School's Learning Lab/Community Garden, which will promote environmental education by expanding on an existing garden on the school's campus. Through apprenticeships, outside classroom lessons, and community meetings students, teachers, and parents in the Joseph George Middle School community will become more aware of environmental and land use issues. End results will include: improved student academic outcomes, increased knowledge and awareness of gardening and the environment for all involved constituencies, the beautification of the school campus and the neighborhood, and the introduction of freshly-grown produce into the diets of several families who currently live in a park-poor neighborhood within a food desert section of San Jose. Construction will begin in Spring 2018.

Outdoor Leadership Trainings for South Bay Educators and Families

Bay Area Wilderness Training is increasing access to the outdoors for Santa Clara educators, youth, and families by leading wilderness trainings and providing free outdoor equipment loans. BAWT Outdoor Leadership Trainings offers course scholarships for at-need educators and students in Santa Clara Valley. Free equipment for youth and leaders is administered through the South Bay Gear Library located in Milpitas to support educator-led trips in the South Bay.

Stojanovich Family Park

The Open Space Authority contributed funds towards the development of this 1.3-acre park, including walking trails, a pedestrian bridge, benches, a landscaped swale with a biotreatment component, and interpretive signs that shows the agricultural history of the site.

RIDESV Enviro Series

RIDESV is a three year monthly bike ride series working with partner organizations to enhance access to open space. The partner organizations include those focused on environmental issues as well as those working directly with low income populations. The program aims to increase bicycling as a sustainable form of transportation, connect people to open space, and share knowledge among partner organizations to educate participants.
